Burst water main leaves Bolton residents with discoloured water

Many Bolton residents were left with discoloured water today due to a burst water main.

A number of residents with a BL6 postcode have had discoloured water coming from their taps for most of today, with United Utilities still working to fix the issue.

This problem was caused by a burst water main on Station Road in Blackrod, with engineers working from around 12.30pm to flush the water mains network in the area to resolve this.

A United Utilities spokesman, said: "We’ve received a number of calls from customers in BL6, Bolton letting us know that their tap water is discoloured.

"Our pipes have naturally occurring sediments and minerals which can get disturbed from the bottom of the pipes every now and then, normally when we have carried out a repair or have replaced a section of water main.

"We know it doesn’t look nice but don’t worry, it’s unlikely to be harmful and will settle down again with time. You can help by letting your cold water tap run at a slight trickle until your water runs clear again."

United Utilities urged customers to visit www.unitedutilities.com/help-and-support/your-water-supply/your-water/water-quality/water-appearance/discoloured-water/ for help and support around discoloured water.
