Holiday Brits in Costa del Sol could face 2am curfew over surging Covid rates

Brits may soon have to reign the partying in while abroad in the Costa del Sol.

Two of the local authorities in the Spanish holiday hotspot, Marbella and Estepona, are facing night-time curfews due to their high number of coronavirus infections.

The measure is being proposed by the regional government which wants to limit movement between 2am and 7am.

But the curfew cannot go ahead unless it is authorised by the Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia and approval is not guaranteed.

A similar request was made by the Canary government for Tenerife but was refused on appeal.

If it was introduced, it would deal a minor blow to Brits sunning themselves in the area, which became much easier to visit since the Westminster eased travel laws.

Now people travelling from England to Spain do not need to isolate for ten days upon their return, so long as they're double jabbed.

Public health officials say both Marbella and Estepona have exceeded the set out barrier of 1,000 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days.

Malaga just dipped below the mark by 50 infections.

The Andalusian government says it has taken into account hospital and ICU rates, the percentage of positive tests and vaccine coverage.

It is now pushing for a curfew from 2am to 7am.

Already restrictions on the area mean bars and restaurants can only be half full inside, with a limit of four people per table and six outside,

Beaches are also being closed from 11pm to 7am in the hope of deterring people from after hours drinking sessions.

At the moment coronavirus cases in Spain remain close to the country's pandemic peak in January, with the country recording more than 26,000 yesterday.

However, over the past week infections have plateaued.

Despite this, it has been hinted that Spain could be added to the amber plus list during the UK government’s next review.
